Varicose veins
Varicose veins are venous tortuosity and dilation caused by stagnant blood and weak venous walls. Varicose veins can occur in various parts of the body such as the esophagus, stomach, spermatic cord, and abdominal wall. Hemorrhoids are a form of varicose vein and are more commonly seen in the lower extremities. It is also worth emphasizing that varicose veins themselves may be secondary manifestations of other diseases that should be treated primarily.
Varicose veins of the lower extremities are caused by a number of reasons but most commonly result from incompetence of the femoral saphenous valve. Another important etiology is due to primary deep vein valve insufficiency (PDVI) of the lower extremities, which is often associated with the great saphenous vein valve insufficiency and often shows tortuous expansion of the superficial veins. In addition, the syndrome after deep venous thrombosis of the lower extremities, due to poor deep venous reflux, results in superficial venous compensatory tortuous expansion. The arteriovenous fistula and venous malformation of the lower extremity and hypertrophic syndrome can also show varicose veins of the lower extremity. Obstruction of the inferior vena cava return flow, such as buga syndrome, can also cause varicose veins.
Obese patients should try to lose weight as the overweight force that presses on the leg may aggravate symptoms of varicose veins. People engaged in heavy physical labor or work jobs where they stand for a long time should wear compressive elastic socks. Additionally, women who are pregnant should be especially careful toward their legs during this period and be mindful to get more rest. Massage can help blood circulation and be a preventative measure in the development of varicose veins.
