Peripheral aneurysm
Aneurysms are localized or fusiform dilations from arterial wall lesions. The main symptom of an aneurysm is a pulsating mass. Peripheral aneurysm is one that occurs in an artery other than the aorta. The most common sites are the femoral and popliteal arteries. These pathologies are mostly seen in the elderly as a result of atherosclerosis and arterial wall degeneration resulting in arteries that have difficulty withstanding pressure changes.
The peripheral aneurysm site is superficial, and the diagnosis is generally not difficult according to the pulsating mass in the vascular walk region. The diagnosis can be made by combining color ultrasound, CTA, MRA, or DSA. However, attention should be paid to the possibility of multiple peripheral aneurysms. Also, lower limb aneurysm may be bilateral or concomitant with aortic aneurysm. Detailed examination should be conducted to avoid missed diagnosis.
After the diagnosis of aneurysm, attention should be paid to the possible causes as this will likely affect treatment. For example, local pulsating mass after trauma suggests the possibility of posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm. In the acute phase of infective endocarditis or patients who had a long fever before treatment, they should be aware of the possibility of an infectious aneurysm. Long-term hypothermia, night sweats, joint pain and so on should signal an immunological correlation. Repeated mouth and vulva ulcers should be an alert to white plug disease.
